We are participating in the Give Life 5K to support Iowa Donor Network and their mission!
My name is Randi Kriegel, I was the 321st person to receive a heart transplant in Iowa. Cardiac surgeon Dr. Turek and his team spent more than 12 hours on my surgery the morning of April 20th, 2014 at the University of Iowa Hospital. It was Easter Sunday.
My family and I are walking to celebrate 10 years of gifted life! In that time I've had both ups and downs.
I got to witness my brother get married and give me another sister(who beat cancer, go Jen!) and I have also met 5 more nieces and nephews, totaling to 7 I've been lucky enough to watch grow into smart and kind people with awesome personalities, I am so proud of them.
In the last year my boyfriend Jim and I were fortunate to start our own family and we welcomed our daughter Ruth into this world on August 30th, 2023. We beat the odds together as a family and are all currently healthy and happy. We are blessed beyond measure to be her parents.
I am also walking in memory for two very important people, AND both of their donors.
Terri Friday and Brandon Penrod.
Terri received her heart transplant in March 2014, the month before me. She was a wild, happy, and vibrant person who loved to joke around with everybody, she is so missed.
Brandon received his heart transplant in May 2014 on Mother's Day, the month after me. He became a welder after he was transplanted, lived life to the fullest, and was such a good friend.
There's not a day that goes by I don't think about one of them but I'm grateful our donors allowed us to stay a little longer.
