Big Mike
I am running in honor of my dad, Michael Askren. My dad got a double lung transplant in 2009 and he was the 23rd person at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics to get this procedure done. I was in 5th grade when my dad finally got the call and I still remember the mix of emotions that we all felt that day and throughout the process. Because of his very gracious donor and their family, we were lucky enough to get an extra 13 years with the best man I have ever known. With extremely broken hearts, we said goodbye to our favorite guy on December 22, 2022. To know him was to love him and he was the first to give a helping hand without question. We miss him beyond words and our hearts ache to see him and hear his voice again. Without our gracious donor, we would not have had all of the amazing memories that we were able to have with my dad. He would not have been able to go on a trip with my mom, see my brother and I graduate high school, and college, or be a part of both of our weddings last summer. There will never be enough words to say thanks to our incredible donor and their family and all of the amazing doctors, nurses, and all of the healthcare professionals that saved my dad and gave us extra time with our best friend.
